Born and raised in Opelika, Kate graduated from Opelika High School in 1978, earned an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Mississippi in 1982, a masters in personnel management from Troy (State) University in 1987, and before retiring, she "secretly" earned a masters degree in adult education from Auburn University in 2021. You'll have to ask her to tell you that story.
Kate was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest child started pre-school, and in 1995, she was named the first public relations coordinator for Opelika City Schools, where she served for 14 years. In 2008, she accepted a job with the Auburn Alumni Association at Auburn University, where she worked for 15 years before retiring in September of 2023. In April of 2025, she passed the Alabama Real Estate exam. She is also a freelance writer for East Alabama Living and Auburn Magazine.
Kate served on the Board of Directors for United Way of Lee County for more than 20 years. She was surprised with the Spirit of Opelika award in 2021, the highest honor given by the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, and in 2023, was named Citizen of the Year by the Auburn Civitan Club.
Kate's children, Anna and Ian Carlson live in Atlanta, and Bo and Catherine Larkin live in Auburn and have two daughters, Olivia and Violet, who made Kate a "Bubbie" and stole her heart.
